Luckily, this now stale bread doesn’t have to go to waste-because YOU can turn it into bread crumbs. I know, I know that sounds complicated, but really it’s quite simple with the use of your food processor or blender.
I love homemade bread crumbs because they can save you money and help you prevent wasting food. Making homemade bread crumbs is also a great way to use the heel of the bread that some people don’t like to eat.
Homemade bread crumbs are great in meatloaf, meatballs, stuffing, eggplant parmesan, or as a breading (like for these delicious vegetarian cauliflower nuggets) You can also make seasoned bread crumbs by adding some Italian seasoning or spicy seasonings. Gluten free!? No worries just use your gluten free bread instead.

How To Make Fresh Bread crumbs
To make fresh bread crumbs, you need the bread that’s not too soft. You should avoid processed sandwich bread (think “Wonderbread”) when making fresh bread crumbs. For fresh bread crumbs, you can use bakery bread, supermarket bread, or delicious homemade bread that has a good crusty exterior.
Ready to make some bread crumbs? Simply tear the bread into small pieces (about 6-8 pieces from one chunk of bread) then put in a food processor bowl or blender fitted with a steel blade. Pulse it until the bread pieces turn into crumbs (for 1 second intervals for about 10 seconds).
You can store fresh bread crumbs in an airtight container in a refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze them for up to 6 months. If using frozen bread crumbs, you can use them directly from frozen or thaw them in refrigerator.
How To Make Dried Bread crumbs
To make dried bread crumbs, first you need to dry out the bread by baking it in the oven, and then process it in the food processor. You can use store bought sandwich bread (i.e. “Wonderbread”) when making these dried bread crumbs.
Preheat the oven to 200F. Put the bread slices on the cookie sheet in a single layer and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
Let the dried bread cool down, then break it into pieces (about 6-8 pieces per slice of bread) and process in the food processor until the bread pieces turn into crumbs. You can store dry bread crumbs in a ziplock bag in a pantry for a month, or freeze them for up to 6 months and use directly from frozen.
